Happy Wednesday!
Some may ask, why do I, a fashion blogger, do a Black History Month Style Edit? The simple answer is that its important to recognize the achievements of those who have gone before.
For most Black Fashion History is limited to Iman, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks. Some may know Beverly Johnson, Alek Wek, Selita Ebanks, and Beverly Peele but most don't. I confess that I too had limited knowledge and it wasn't until I purposed that I would celebrate the Black contribution to fashion on the blog that I learned about the likes of Donyale Luna, Naomi Sims, B. Smith, Pat Cleveland, and Bethann Hardison.
And true to the quote by Mr. Woodson, I was inspired by their fight for space in the industry, their will to create their own space, their activism and their entrepreneurship.
As is true in everything in life if you don't know your history, where you come from and who paved the way for you to be in the lane you are in you lose the admiration and motivation needed to help you to keep striving for success. We can get bogged down in our own struggles because we fail to appreciate the sacrifice of those who have come before.
Even looking at the lives of Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, Diahann Carroll, Josephine Baker and others who aren't traditional models but were style icons is inspiring for me to keep fighting even when the road seems blocked. There is always a way. If they could make it, so can I.
So today, make sure that you pay homage to your history. Both the written and the unwritten. Don't lose the inspiration of the accomplishments of those who have come before you.
Happy Shopping!
