Prabal Gurung's Powerful Statement at NYFW

On a Beautiful runway adorned with flowers, Set to the Sam Cooke's tune, A Change Gonna Come, Prabal Gurung asked the question, "Who Get's To Be American?"

Fashion is not always about the clothes, although his collection, colorful and vibrant as always, was on full display. We forget that it is also an art form and artists have for centuries used their medium to question society and engage conversation in a way that doesn't divide.

As with most of the shows I watched, diversity was on full display with plus sized models, models of color and gender bending design choices it was as if his show was provoking you to see these faces and ask yourself, do they get to be American? Do I? Do we?

I love when fashion makes a statement not just for its beauty but because there is and has always been a depth to it that we miss (or should I say dismiss) when we only focus on being pretty.
