Handling Stress When You're Stuck in the House

Apr 20, 2020 0 comments
I wish that this post was going to be all rainbows and lollipops. That I could tell you I have all the answers and the formula to not lose your mind while your stuck inside with nothing but your thoughts and social media information on a never-ending loop. But I'm gonna be honest, this is new and unchartered territory for everyone and we are just figuring it out as we go.

The question I think we are all asking is...

What does stress relief look like when you can't go no where?

Many will say to do yoga or meditate but that can hard in a house full of people, two littles constantly scrambling for your attention and not an empty room to be found. Others say listen to music, take a relaxing bath, light some aromatherapy candles or some incense. Those work for some and if it works for you please do them but for folks like me who's stress relief is waking up early and going to a coffee shop to have some time to myself that ain't helping gonna help long-term.

The truth is, find stress relief where you can find it.

Full transparency: I'm overwhelmed. Working from home full-time with a lot of work responsibility while balancing my two kids who are happy I'm home and don't fully understand I have to work; Being inundated with COVID news for work and just reading through my Twitter feed it is a lot that I wasn't prepared for. I cry everyday as I mourn others loss of loved ones. Grateful to be healthy but desperately waiting for it to be all over so I can get back to my office.

I can't believe I miss my office! How crazy is that?!

How do I find relief?

Coffee. My day doesn't feel right if I don't have my morning coffee. Iced and sweet. Either I order it from Dunkin Donuts (Grubhub rocks) or I make my Starbucks Instant Iced Coffee. Thankfully, on Amazon it is still considered essential. The first sip is the best and it instantly flicks a switch in my brain that its all good.

If for you that looks like a glass of wine, buying a new pair of shoes, eating a piece of your favorite candy, baking, taking a quick (face covered) walk or run, yoga, reading your Bible, listening to music. Whatever it is, do it so that you can be okay.

Giving myself permission. The other day I hit my limit I had back to back meetings, was prepping for audit and my kids were on 10. They are 4 and 2 and it was just nonstop that day. Finally my son, because he was on his Kindle, not pay attention and not listening, knocked my coffee over. All over the table, my papers. He looked sorry but I was so frustrated so I just screamed, walked out my front door and closed it behind me. I took some deep breathes to calm down and then after about ten minutes I came back inside.

Take the pressure off yourself. I acted out of character for myself  but times aren't normal so your allowed to have days when you don't feel normal. Give yourself permission - to scream, to eat some extra ice cream, to go into the bathroom close the door and shut the world out. Whatever it is, its okay. It's unhealthy to hold all in.

Getting Dressed. It is week 6 of quarantine and one thing I have consistently done throughout is get dressed to go to work. I wake up in the morning. Go to the bathroom. Put on my favorite WFH uniform or a top with my comfy bottoms. And go to work. At my kitchen table. Lol. That little bit of normalcy helps to calm my anxiety. Especially as being in my house all day, everyday becomes tedious and, at times, stifling.

Acknowledging how I feel. While I do limit my social media and news consumption of the coronavirus, so that I limit the amount of fear and anxiety I feel, I also acknowledge that I feel it. All of it. I know there are people that have it worse than me but I don't diminish how I feel because of that.

What I feel is valid.

Life is seemingly upside-down. So many people are losing folks they love.
So many have lost their jobs. So many people are facing food insecurity. First responders, grocery store workers, my father, my cousins, my god-brothers, my brother-in-law, Grubhub delivery people are risking their lives because they are essential workers.

So everyday I read a few of the stories and I cry and pray. For them. For me. For our country. And then I shut it down. Its okay to feel in this moment and by allowing myself to feel I can release all the pent up emotion.

How are you lovelies handling the stress?
