I found freedom in fashion. When I was younger I didn't always like myself. I
was shy and insecure.
[Insert insecurity here.]
I always dreamed about being someone else. Anyone else other than myself.
Because if I don't like me well no one else will either. Right?
"When you don't dress like everyone else, you don't have to think like
everyone else."
—Iris Apfel
My safe place was in my grandmother's closet. She had so many beautiful things
in tweeds and suedes, these rich quality fabrics. And this pair of suede pumps
that when I walked in them made me think I was walking on air.
As I got older I developed this eye for pairing pieces together.
I was wearing
monochrome before it was popular and high school was my runway.
Because I didn't dress like everyone else it gave me a unique voice. I was my
own person. I had my own mind. And as I've gotten older, I'm grateful that I
set myself apart.
I may follow trends, but I stay true to me. And that's the point, really. Style
is personal, and it doesn't require you to think like everyone else. All that
is required is that you be uniquely yourself.
