Today is "Wear Purple Day" to stand in solidarity with the survivors of domestic violence.
This is a reality for many women, men and children and it touches everyone even if we aren't fully aware.
When I was a kid my siblings and I came home from school one day and we all of a sudden had a "nanny". The way my mom explained it to us, she needed some extra help around the house and she had a nanny when she was little growing up in Aruba. For me and my sibs we just said ok and thought nothing of it. She was nice, friendly, and a good cook.
As time went on I noticed that our nanny never went near the windows or the door. She always stayed in the back of the house unless she was cooking and we couldn't open the blinds in the kitchen or the living room. I was young but even I knew something was off.
Then one day as she was helping us clean our room I asked her why she was acting so strange. And that's when she told us her story, she showed us her scars and told us to never let a man put his hands on us. What my sister and I learned that day was that our house was a stop on her journey to freedom from her husband and his abuse.
When I tell you she was the sweetest lady. My mind couldn't fathom how someone could be hurting her. And then just as suddenly as she had appeared she was gone. At first I got scared because I thought somehow her husband had found out and got her. But, no her time with my family had come to and end and she was off to the next stop.
I think of her anytime I see a post on on social or a news story about domestic violence. And I think of my parents who took a chance and stood in the gap for this scared and frightened woman who thought there was no way out and no hope.
They have raise over $10M for nonprofits that serve and support women like my "nanny". And for every $10 you donate you are entered to win a Leather Purple Purse designed by Serena Williams!
